Rythmn of the 21st Century

Rhythm of the 21st Century exhibition at GALERI PETRONAS showcases the latest artworks by Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin. The exhibition is the seventh solo exhibition for the artist and features 20 major sculptures, drawings and paintings.

Though the concept of the exhibition is based on war, indicated through the representations of armour and ammunitions, the underlying notion of Rythmn of the 21st Century is about the innate human nature that constantly engages in prevalent conflicts in this new century, taking cues of what transpired throughout the ages.

Raja Shahriman's artworks are strikingly surreal and grotesquely beautiful at the same time. In creating the sculptures, he employs the Malay blacksmithing traditional methods but expresses the material in contemporary cosmopolitan context, whereby the forms incorporated in his sculptures allude to the nature of mankind. His paintings meanwhile are expressed in dark outlandish panache, simultaneously combining both figurative and abstract elements. Conversely, his drawings of slick exoskeletal humanoids in differing thrusting poses and pieces in blasted-out forms greatly appeal to the masses, reminiscent of the works by H.R. Giger, the highly acclaimed Swiss surreal artist who created the terrifying life form in the science-fiction film ALIEN. This is definitely one exhibition that is not to be missed.

Rhythm of the 21st Century runs from 29 October 2009 till 24 January 2010 at GALERI PETRONAS, Level 3, Suria KLCC. Admission is free.
